Here are some of the applications that i used in my designs most of them are freeware software.
one of them is gimp
a photo manipulation software that is free and easy to use. gimp is like Photoshop, you can save your files as psd or whatever file format you want that gimp supported.

Next is Swift 3D, this software gives you the chance to make 3D design for free. i used swift 3D for some of my 3D design.
I also used Swift 3D for my designs in my thesis project in school,
you can also use Swift 3D to create swf file, targa, and many more.

Next is Portable Apps., Portable apps. is a site where you can find portable application that you need.
example is portable gimp, and many more that you can put in your flash drive and you can used it wherever you are.
Portable Apps Provides packaged software suitable for use on portable media, without leaving settings files on the host computer.
